Artist's Statement
There are several series
of work represented by these photos. Techniques and subject matter often
overlap as an idea develops. Clay has been my primary means of expression
for many years and is still present in my newer work, as is the subject
matter of the human form. When working with clay I find that I love the
color and texture of Bisqued clay (i.e., clay that has been fired once
and left unglazed, see “Woman as Vessel” pieces). When glazing
I use copper based glazes and the Raku method for firing (See Raku pieces).
In both presentations of clay objects I like the ambiguity that the surface
presents to the viewer… is it metal, paper or clay?
More recently I have
moved into the sculptural world of found objects. Quite often clay objects
work their way into a piece (see Breastplates, Night Baby and Earth Baby).
Found Object work is exciting, as it seems to take a life of its own:
disparage pieces come together as a whole creating a symbolic journey
for the creator and viewer alike.
With my pastel pieces,
it is a journey back to my childhood roots in the love of drawing and
a new way to express my muse. I love how a piece comes alive before my
eyes, how it takes on depth and expression, how it is the emotion of reality.
In the pastel pieces, the human form is the major link to my other work,
however, I often use a clay “tablet” as my paper and oxides
and colorants used in glaze work as my “pastels” (see “I
Thumb”).
My artwork is an outgrowth
of my life, my loves and my experiences. As such much of it is very personal
and, at least for now, is not all available for sale (for example, “Raku:
Baby in Garden” and “Raku: Baby Buddha”) however, commissions
are accepted to do similar pieces as Raku or in pastel. Please call or
email me to discuss details.
Thank you for your
time and interest in my work!
